In honor of our wedding anniversary I want to share with you guys our favorite food, hikes, beaches & tourist spots worth visiting. We celebrated our honeymoon on Maui 4 years ago today! Last year was our most recent trip to Maui as we celebrated our 3 year anniversary on the island. We have been to Maui three times since we’ve been married, so I’m excited to share our favorite things to do in Maui.
Let’s start off with some of our favorite adventure activities. If you don’t want to pay for a snorkeling excursion definitely check out Ulua beach! We love doing some light snorkeling & swimming here. The waves are generally a lot calmer on this beach & the reefs are a close swim which house fun fish, eels, & sea urchins.
Tip: Easy. Bring goggles or snorkeling masks & reef safe sunscreen. (sometimes your condo may have snorkeling gear to borrow for free.)
Another fun adventure activity on Maui that we highly recommend is a hike. Specifically the Waihee Ridge Trail. This trail is a 2.5 mile hike round trip with spectacular views of the lush mountain ridges, waterfalls & the ocean. Our views going up were hidden behind fog, but on the way down it was absolutely gorgeous.
Tip: Not too difficult. Wear good hiking boots or tennis shoes. Also, bring water & snacks.
My number one favorite thing to do on Maui (besides eat) is the Road to Hana. This may be a tourist stop, but there is plenty of adventure & exploring to be had around every corner of this drive. I can’t tell you how many times we pulled over to checkout gorgeous views of the ocean. We’ve only been once but we can’t wait to go back.
Be aware of blind corners, single lane bridges, narrow roads & sharp turns on your drive to & from the Road to Hana.
Our Road to Hana Stops:
- 6.5 Mile Marker Bamboo Forest Trail/ Waterfall
- Garden of Eden Arboretum
- Seven Sacred Pools or The Poos at ‘Ohe’o
Without having much in the way of plans for the day we decided to make 6.5 Mile our first stop. It was gorgeous & amazing being surrounded by a sea of bamboo. We realized it was a trail to a couple waterfalls after crossing a wide stream. Decided we would skip the waterfalls, the bamboo trail was gorgeous on it’s own.
Then we stopped at the Garden of Eden which had pretty views of distant waterfalls, the ocean & had tons of pretty tropical plants & flowers. The Rainbow Eucalyptus Trees are my favorite!
We ended our trip at the Seven Sacred Pools. Stopped to swim for awhile & ate our packed lunch. Then headed back to our condo after a long day of driving & exploring. Other than our main stops we enjoyed the beautiful views from the drive & stopped whenever we wanted to check something out.
Tip: Bring water, packed lunch or snacks, sunscreen, bathing suit, towels & water or tennis shoes depending on your adventure plans.
Let’s start with the best shave ice I’ve had on the island. S&Q’s Shave Ice & Coffee or Beach Street Maui Shave Ice located in Kihei. Same place, but they may have changed ownership. They still have the best shave ice & I highly suggest ordering it with Ice cream on the bottom & topped with haupia. This combo is truly dreamy & a must.
We don’t usually eat fancy, but one of our favorite things to do on Maui is eat. We love some good food. Tommy Bahama Restaurant is one of our favorite spots! Located in The Shops At Wailea near Kihei. We love the lobster bisque & tacos for appetizers. Then anything that sounds delish for our entree. Definitely worth it. I recommend going for lunch to cut costs yet still enjoying some truly incredible food.
A walking distance favorite. Fred’s Mexican Cafe. Located right down the street from the shave ice place & the condos we usually stay at. I highly recommend these deep fried things on my plate called Chicken Chingaderas. They were so good I don’t even have words for it. The burritos are also delicious as well as all of their other options.
We also love a good Japanese inspired restaurant & enjoy getting some sushi at Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar. Amazing variety, yummy appetizers & oh so good all around. If you’re a sushi fan, we highly recommend!
This restaurant is upscale, classic & indulgent. If you haven’t heard of Mama’s Fish House you better buy yourself a ticket to Maui sooner than later! It is by far our favorite restaurant on Maui. If we could eat there every trip we would! You have to eat here at least once in your life. Also highly recommend their Passion Fruit Creme Brulee
Worth. Every. Penny.
It’s fun to be a tourist & learn about a new culture. We loved the Maui Tropical Plantation. It is so beautiful. We also did the tour of the plantation which was so cool! Seeing how all the different fruits & plants grow was incredible. That’s where I learned pineapples grow from the ground!
Another fun adventure is driving up to the Haleakala Volcano. It’s kind of a zig zag drive all the way up to the top of the mountain. It was fairly foggy when we went, but it was still incredible. I’ve heard it’s a great sunrise or sunset trip.
Want to see some Sea Turtles?? Who wouldn’t! Ho’okipa Beach Park is one of their popular places to lay on the beach. We’ve seen & swam near Sea Turtles in many areas around Hawaii, but this is the only beach we’ve seen them on shore.
We have a lot of favorites, but this one takes the cake for me. I feel like I’m in the middle of a Jurassic Park movie when we visit Iao Valley State Park. (Which I LOVE.) Pictures don’t do it justice. You’ll just have to go see!
If you stop in Lahaina you have to see this tree. Yes, this is all ONE TREE with 16 trunks. Lahaina Banyon Court Park is home of the largest Banyon tree in the US. It’s pretty cool to see & they sometimes have a market going.
Ready for a day at the spa? The Spa at Grand Wailea is incredible. Go in for a massage or facial & enjoy the specialty baths. Relaxation awaits!
Relax on the sand & listen to the waves on Big Beach Maui. Bring a drink & a book & you’ll be set! Sometimes I’ll go out & swim with my hubby if the waves are calmer. Otherwise I sit under my umbrella to enjoy the gorgeous views of the ocean.
Watching the sunset is a must. Pictures never do it justice! A relaxing evening walk to the beach to watch the sunset is the best way to end a day exploring this beautiful island.
I hope this has inspired you for you first or next trip to Maui. Let me know what your favorite things to do in Maui are if you’ve been before! Checkout how I packed my carry on for our trip to Maui HERE!
